After the tutor, Jeremy and his English coworker John picked me up to go into the city for a speak-easy meet up. There is a website here called "on va sortir" which means "one will go out" and people post up what they want to do, when they want to do it, and how many people they would like to join them. In this instance, a person made an event to practice English today at 5 pm at a bar in center city. People can view the event and mark down that they will come.
Side note, the French use "one" a lot here. Like they would say "One speaks French in France" instead of "You" or "One eats dinner after 7" to mean "People generally eat dinner after 7". It's also used as a familiar form of "we" and at this point doesn't mean "one" but is simply a familiar term used among friends. Now that I think about it, "on va sortir" in the website's context actually probably refers to the familiar form of "we" versus "one", so "we will go out". It's very confusing when the same word means different things! And yet they have, like, 10 different words for chicken depending on its age, gender, and whether it's alive or not!
Anyway, we get to the bar early and it's in a large commonplace. There is a stone gazebo nearby and a chorus group of about 25 people are singing, accompanied by a few instruments. It was very nice. Very random for a Thursday at 4 pm, but very nice. We sat outside as it was actually a pretty decent day, but as the sun went down, it of course got colder. Our discomfort made us realize it was now well past 5 and no one was here. Turns out they got the date wrong! Oh well, at least we had John for company!
We walked back to the apartment, about a 10 minute walk, while I took in the sights of Grand Rue. Grand Rue is one of the main streets of center city and is completely lined with stores of all kinds. It is really very beautiful. Below are pictures I stole from the internet, as I was too absorbed to think of taking pictures.
Tomorrow, I may not post anything. We will be having our first house guest over, Jean-Nikolas!
