I think I mentioned briefly before about Besançon having hard water (I accidentally insulted someone by casually mentioning it). It's a horror, especially for someone who likes to keep shiny surfaces shiny. All the spigots, glassware, and the drainboard are constantly cloudy looking, even when clean. For the glassware and pot lids and such, I just have to dry them right away and they will stay mostly clear. It's not as easy for the hardware, as you can't really dry them off with ease. I have tried both store-bought and homemade cleaners to no avail. I mean they clean them well enough it's true, but the next time you go to use the sink or shower, it looks like you never cleaned it to begin with.
However, I have found a cure for the way hard water treats hair. It always leaves mine easy to tangle, hard to manage, and sticky like it didn't get all the shampoo and conditioner out. I can rinse and rinse until there is no more hot water left and it will still feel sticky. Not to mention I am now a human prune.
But, thanks to hairbuddha I have found a solution. The minerals in hard water eventually create a scaly film on your hair and scalp, preventing moisture from getting in and leaving your hair dry, tangled, dull, and can even alter the color. 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to 3 cups of water in between your shampoo and conditioner will wash the film away. Let it stay for a few minutes before rinsing it out. You can literally feel the slime wash out of your hair, it's awesome and kind of gross at the same time. Lemon can dry your hair out, but I also use argan oil after my shower which can make it greasy so they seem to be balancing one another out.
A couple words of wisdom:
1. Strain your lemon juice well! The first time I did it I just juiced it and stirred it up in 3 cups of water. This lead me to about a half an hour of picking pulp out of my hair. It took so long eventually Jeremy started helping and I felt like we had reverted into our primate ancestors.
2. Use shower water for your 3 cups of water. The hairbuddha article told me to combine tbsp of lemon and 3 cups of water, making sure to mix well. So naturally I did it right before I took my shower and brought the mix in with me. When I poured it on my head, it was so cold! It was torture. So the next time I just brought the lemon juice in the measuring cup and figured the streams from the shower head were doing a good enough job mixing it.
It still left a little sticky feeling to my hair, but it was so much better than before. It doesn't seem to have an exact lasting time. The first time was about a week and a half while the second time was about a week. I guess it depends on how much you sweat and how much extra product like hair sprays and such you put in your hair. Speaking of, it's a very good alternative to clarifying shampoo when you want to get all your hair product gunk out of your hair.
