I think I mentioned before that Monoprix, the grocery store I live next to, has different fresh produce almost every day. In Winter it was a rotation of your normal, winter vegetables; root vegetables, mushrooms, you get the idea. Well now that Spring is coming, I'm starting to see some weird and unidentifiable vegetables showing up.
Above on the left are some everyday veggies. The center picture has some more, but in the upper right you can see some brownish things. These are called "tomate noir" or "black tomatoes". A google search for "black tomato" said black tomato is an award winning travel company. Okay. Upon altering my google search to "what are black tomatoes", it said black tomatoes originate from America (one article said Russia) and are becoming popular due to their "intense taste" but don't describe the taste. They are very high in antioxidants including anthocyanin, an antioxidant found in only a handful of fruits (ex: blueberries) that is believed to help fight cancer, diabetes, and obesity. In the picture to the right you can see some adorable spherical zucchini and some funky shaped tomatoes called "coeur du boeuf" or "oxheart" tomatoes and are similar to our beefsteak tomatoes but with less pulp and, like beefsteak, are the ideal tomato for eating raw.
It's very interesting to see what other countries consider normal, every day foods! But that's all I have for today, it's a dreary rainy day. After work, Olivier is taking Jeremy to Leroy Merlin to get our entertainment center/bookcase. Leroy Merlin is like our Lowe's or Home Depot. They have customizable storage so we're basically building our own entertainment center.
